Bio: Born to a mother who died in childbirth and an absent father, Roderick was raised on the streets of Merket by his older brother, who kept him away from gangs and thievery, and worked odd jobs doing manual labour to keep Roderick fed. Roderick helped out once he was old enough, and they had a good life together until Rudolph was killed in a bar fight and Roderick, on his own, became prey for the city guard’s unofficial policy of picking up homeless children and selling them into slavery for extra coin. Roderick was bought by a group of people who trained him to kill, then sold to a wealthy couple who wanted a pet they could keep in their bed. Free of them now, Roderick feels like he should know what he wants to do, but mostly he’s just confused.

Notes:

  • Roderick always assumes the best of people, even now. He’s done this since childhood
  • As a child, Roderick was charismatic, friendly and had very high self-esteem and a lot of friends
  • Roderick was molested several times as a child; multiple times over the span of a month when he was eight by a friend of his brother’s who was watching him, and then four times by four different city guards in the day between when he was picked up from the street and sold to the slave market at eleven years old. He never told anyone in the slave market about any of it so they’d think he was still a virgin
  • Roderick is colourblind
  • Roderick never contemplated or attempted escape from slavery. He never saw the point
  • Roderick was castrated a week after being bought by his master and mistress. His skin was also treated with a cream that would ensure he never grows body hair. They said this would make him prettier
  • Roderick’s inability to lose the weight he gained during slavery is a source of major anxiety for him. He feels it should be one mark of his enslavement he can remove from his body and he can’t manage it
  • Roderick is afraid more than anything of losing the few people he still has in his life
  • Roderick doesn’t agree with Greg and Sylvester’s assessment of Daniel, but keeps it to himself to avoid causing a fight
  • Roderick has no current goals in life. He’s just following the people he cares about in the hopes that he’ll find something to care about

Quotes:

  • “How do you know he’s going to buy us?”
  • “Because I’m the best? I don’t know.”
  • “Don’t listen too hard to me. You were the smart one.”
  • “You don’t have to worry about my feelings.”
  • “Tell you? He got away and you want me to help you bring him here? I don’t fucking think so, you stupid little ankle-grabber.”
  • “Greg? You…you came.”
  • “I thought pelicans were fish.”
  • “It’s weird that you’re good with kids.”
  • “I’ve been feeling like we don’t hang out a lot anymore.”
  • “I go for runs because I know you won’t come with me.”
  • “Are we bad friends?”
  • “We’re not…that’s not our job anymore.”
  • “I should have run after you. I was too slow and I lost you and I…I’m sorry.”

Trivia:

  • Roderick used to feed stray cats as a child
  • At nine years old, Roderick wanted to run a merchant stall when he grew up
  • Roderick had gotten himself an apprenticeship at a butcher when Rudolph died, but he stopped going to work after Rudolph’s death
  • Roderick was considered a good candidate to be sold as a gladiator overseas by the slave market owners
  • Roderick has an irrational fear of bats
  • Roderick is extremely good at math and taught himself how to do it at a young age
  • Roderick can run for five or six hours before tiring
  • Once, Roderick saw a shooting star in the sky. Then he saw it change direction and go back the way it had come. Nobody ever believed him
  • As a young child, Roderick was friends with a boy named Ozzy, who was a few years younger than him but always had snacks he was happy to share
  • When he was seven, Roderick ate a whole loaf of bread in one sitting because someone dared him to

Modern AU: Modern Roderick grew up in foster care with his brother, though they had a tendency to run away from foster homes and live on the streets for months at a time. After Rudolph died in an armed robbery he wasn’t committing, Roderick was found again by social workers and put in what turned out to be a group home where he dropped off the grid for two years. He was then fostered to a wealthy couple who he eventually ran away from for reasons he won’t tell anyone. Thanks to a few bribes, he’s now in a happier foster home and is properly enrolled in school, where he got roped into joining the track team after someone noticed how much stamina he had while running.
